Uttarakhand Political Crisis Stalls Rajya Sabha Proceedings

The Rajya Sabha was disrupted again on Tuesday over the issue of President’s rule in Uttarakhand, with other opposition parties supporting the Congress in its demand for a debate on the issue.

The Congress, supported by the Left, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), demanded an immediate discussion on the issue.

As far as Article 356 and Uttarakhand is concerned we also have a lot to say. It has never happened in 68 years of independence that presiding officers convert minority into majority and vice versa. This is the real breakdown of the constitutional machinery.

Congress members then trooped near the chairman’s podium shouting slogans following which the house was adjourned till noon.

The members of Opposition chanted:

<i>Modi teri tanashahi, nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi</i>. (Your dictatorship will not be tolerated, Modi).

The scenario was the same when the house met again at noon for Question Hour and an angry Chairman M Hamid Ansari first adjourned the house till 12.35 pm and then till 2 pm. Finally the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after multiple adjournments.

The Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Hamid Ansari admitted and sent CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury’s privilege motion on JNU against HRD Minister Smriti Irani to the Committee of Privileges.

BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh, Anurag Thakur, gave notice in the Lok Sabha for discussion on the Augusta Westland scam and the Ishrat Jahan case.

The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day after multiple adjournments. The Rajya Sabha remained tense over the President’s rule in Uttarakhand all day.

Rajya Sabha adjourned till 3 pm following uproar over the Uttarakhand political crisis.

In Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge raises issues related to the Indian Railways.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned till 2 pm. This was the fourth adjournment of the Rajya Sabha and the first of Lok Sabha.

Uproar and sloganeering by Congress members continued in the Well of the House. Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, vice President Hamid Ansari adjourned the House for the third time. Proceedings to resume at 3 pm.

Rajya Sabha adjourned for the second time till 12:35 pm amid furore in the House over the Uttarakhand political crisis.

Declassification of Netaji Files

The matter of declassification of files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was raised in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has said that Japan is in possession of five files related to Netaji and has decided to declassify two of the five files by end of the year.

Anti-Modi Slogans Over Uttarakhand Issue

Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon after opposition members raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government while discussing the President’s rule in Uttarakhand. The members of Opposition chanted:

Modi teri tanashahi, nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi.
Modi teri Hitlershahi, nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi.
Taanashahi pe halla bol.

JNU Students’ Rustication Fails to Take Centre Stage

CPI leaders raised the matter of rustication and fines levied on the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) yesterday.

CPI members said that the “authoritarian policy” of the current government will spoil the academic career of the students who were suspended by the university.

The matter led to furore in the House as Congressman Anand Sharma alleged that the Human Resources Ministry is directly involved in the matter.

On the second day of the second half of the Budget session, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are expected to lock horns over the Uttarakhand issue, yet again.

The BJP on Monday issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, asking them to be present in Parliament till Friday.

The Congress too issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in the Rajya Sabha.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has given a motion of suspension of business to discuss issues related to the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the Rajya Sabha.

On Monday, JNU suspended and fined students who were allegedly involved in the event held on campus on 9 February – the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack death row convict Afzal Guru.
