Terming the outcome of the bypolls in Kairana and Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh as a defeat of divisive politics, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav today said the voters had delivered a befitting response to the BJP.
"This is a defeat for those who do not believe in democracy and play divisive politics. People have given a befitting reply to the BJP," he said at a press conference after the opposition candidates had established decisive leads in the counting for both constituencies.
"I thank and congratulate the voters in Noorpur and Kairana. This is a victory for the farmers, the poor and the Dalits," Yadav said.
The Congress termed today's outcome of the bypolls as the people's mandate against the four years of the Narendra Modi rule and the beginning of the end of BJP's empire.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told reporters,"The writing on the wall is clear. The BJP's exit and success of the Congress and its allies are guaranteed." He accused the Modi government of totally ignoring the poor and the farmers in last four years.
Tejashwi Yadav, in a statement to ANI, took a dig at the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal, stating that they lost in Bihar’s Jokihat despite using “all their money and all their power.”
Home Minister and BJP minister Rajnath Singh said to ANI, in a response to the BJP’s victory in just one out of 11 assembly seats that it contested in, said that the party was just “taking two steps back to prepare for a giant leap.”
Samajwadi Party candidate Naeemul Hasan won the Noorpur Assembly bypoll defeating nearest rival Avni Singh of the BJP by a margin of 5,662 votes, PTI reported.
Hasan, who was supported by other opposition parties also, polled 94,875 votes while Avni Singh polled 89,213 votes, returning officer Dhruv Tripathi said.
A bypoll was necessitated following the death of Avni Singh's husband BJP MLA Lokendra Singh Chauhan in a road accident in February
The Congress has won the Shahkot Assembly seat in Punjab, reports ANI. Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi won the Assembly seat. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Naib Singh Koha, who came in second, had earlier alleged that the EVMs had been rigged and had demanded a probe.
Punjab's ruling Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi wrested the Shahkot assembly seat from the Shiromani Akali Dal, defeating the party's nominee Naib Singh Kohar with a margin of 38,801 votes, an election office spokesperson said.
Ladi got 82,745 votes while Akali candidate Kohar polled 43,944 votes in the May 28 bypoll, the spokesperson said.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan polled just 1,900 votes.
BJP wins Uttarakhand’s Tharali bypoll assembly, reports News18. Party candidate Munni Devi Shah defeated her Congress rival Jeet Ram by over 1,900 votes.
Trinamool Congress candidate Dulal Chandra Das has won the Maheshtala Assembly bypoll, defeating BJP nominee Sujit Ghosh.
JMM candidate Seema Devi Mahto has won the Silli Assembly seat by 13,500 votes, beating AJSU president Sudesh Mahto.
In the first electoral test for the new coalition government in Karnataka, the Congress today gained an upper hand winning the Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly seat with a margin of over 25,400 votes, pushing its post-poll ally JD(S) to a distant third position behind BJP.
