Posts with #RaGaFromKarnataka trended on Twitter on Friday, 15 March as former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress party leader Siddaramaiah invited Congress President Rahul Gandhi to contest from Karnataka.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Dinesh Gundurao also echoed Siddaramaiah’s sentiments.
According to The Times Of India, talks were on to invite Rahul or sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Karnataka, as both Indira Gandhi and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi received popular support in the state when they contested from the Chikkamagaluru (1978) and Ballari (1999) Lok Sabha seats, respectively.
The TOI also quoted sources to say that the idea came up as Narendra Modi contested from both Varanasi and Vadodara in 2014 and then went on to become Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, the chant on Twitter grew louder with users joining in on Siddaramaiah and Gundu Rao’s demand.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections Rahul Gandhi stood from Amethi where he defeated his competitor, BJP’s Smriti Irani, by 1.07 lakh votes. In 2009, he had won by a margin of 3.7 lakh votes.
