Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and his daughter have tested positive for COVID-19. Six staff members at the CM's office have also been infected by the virus.
The CM on Sunday, 2 August, took to Twitter to say that he has tested positive. Yediyurappa added that while he was fine, he was being hospitalised as a “precaution on the recommendation of doctors” and asked people who had come into contact with him to exercise self-quarantine.
In a statement issued early on Monday, the Manipal Hospital, where he is admitted, said, "Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa has been admitted to the hospital for observation. He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team.”
Meanwhile, the Karnataka health department announced that all those who met the Yediyurappa in the last 2-3 days would be tested for the virus, with the CM’s travel history of the last one week will also be checked.
Yediyurappa had met state Governor Vajubhai Vala and minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday, NDTV reported.
Karnataka has recorded a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the last few days, with its tally standing at over 1.34 lakh and the death toll at 2,496.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for coronavirus and was getting himself hospitalised on the advice of the doctors.
Various political leaders took to Twitter to wish the Karnataka CM a speedy recovery after his announcement.
