Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra has expressed his desire to quit ahead of the completion of his second term as governor of the troubled state, reported NDTV.

Vohra reportedly told Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday that he wants to resign. The Centre, however, has reportedly asked him to retain office as his replacement has not been found yet.

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi rubbished these reports and also scotched rumours that he would be the next Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, saying he would be going to his home town Jaipur on Thursday on his retirement. He said he has no information on the possibility of Vohra putting in his papers.

Mehrishi, a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre officer IAS officer, will demit office on Thursday. There were reports that claimed Mehrishi would replace Vohra after he retires as a bureaucrat.

It is still unclear why Vohra wants to resign, though sources close to him say he is unhappy by the handling of affairs in the Valley since the July 2016 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen posterboy Burhan Wani, that triggered widespread violence in Kashmir.

Vohra had been appointed as the governor in 2008 by the then Congress-led government. He was the first civilian governor of the state in nearly two decades.
