“I promise you to develop Bihar if the NDA comes to power here”, said PM Modi at his first rally in Bihar, after the poll schedule was announced. His promise entails helping develop Bihar if the BJP-led NDA party comes to power. However, Bihar is one of India’s most backward states, as it lags behind in many parameters like literacy rates, population, per-capita annual income, etc.

  • Bihar has a literacy rate of 64%, which is lower than states like Uttar Pradesh (69.7%) and West Bengal (77%).
  • Bihar is facing a serious power crunch. Its per-capita power consumption is 144 kilo watt hour (kwh), 85% lower than the all-India average of 927 kwh.

The Quint highlights a few such parameters.
