Delhi Police Makes Forensic Probe Compulsory for Cases with 6+ Years Punishment

At the direction of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Delhi Police has made forensic investigation mandatory in all the cases where punishment exceeds six years to make the conviction rates higher, officials said on Tuesday, 30 August.

Shah had visited the headquarters of the Delhi Police and held extensive discussions with senior police officials.

At the meeting, the home minister said that that surveillance is a "major component of policing in preventing and investigating crime."

"Hence cameras installed by the civil administration and police in Delhi, as well as CCTV cameras installed in public places like airports, railway stations, bus stands, markets, and RWAs, should be integrated with the control room," Shah said, as per an official statement.

He also took stock of security arrangements for the G-20 summit, which is scheduled to be held in India, and directed a team from the home ministry to visit some of the countries where G-20 summits had been successfully organised, to study security arrangements.

The statement also reported Shah directing the police to file charge sheets only after legal vetting, especially in identified offences of a serious nature.

Also, he called for paramount importance to be accorded to the safety of women, children and senior citizens, and enhanced sensitivity towards them.

Shah further said that traditional hotspots of traffic should be identified, which usually face excessive jam, and their infrastructure and signaling should be improved.

"Full strategy should be considered and alternate action plan should be prepared to facilitate traffic movement at these hotspots," the statement read.
