A high voter turnout on Monday, 28 January, was recorded in by-elections to the Jind Assembly constituency in Haryana and the Ramgarh Assembly constituency in Rajasthan, where the Congress and BJP are locked in a battle of prestige.
In Jind bypolls, polling percentage was recorded at 75.77 percent, officials said. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of INLD legislator Hari Chand Midha. Congress has fielded party Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala against BJP's Krishna Midda in the constituency.
The turnout was 78.9 percent in Ramgarh, where the election was deferred following the death of BSP candidate Laxman Singh a few days before the 7 December Rajasthan Assembly polls, which saw the Congress defeat the BJP-led dispensation in the state.

Congress has fielded senior leader and party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala while BJP has fielded Krishna Midda, and JJP has fielded Digvijay Chautala from Jind.
Nearly 1.70-lakh people, including 80,556 women, are eligible to vote, officials said. Braving cold weather conditions, people could be seen queuing up at various polling booths to cast their vote. There are 71 polling booths in rural areas of this constituency and 103 polling booths fall in urban areas.
Voting is currently underway for bypolls to the Jind Assembly constituency.

As part of elaborate security arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of polling, nearly 3,000 policemen have been put on duty, a senior police official said. Besides, 500 home guards and over 200 personnel drawn from the CRPF and the Rapid Action Force have also been deployed.
Additional police forces have been deployed at sensitive and highly-sensitive booths.
The Jind assembly segment has been divided into 24 sectors, with six deputy superintendents of police being made in-charge to oversee security arrangements.

Nearly 25 percent polling has been recorded in the first few hours of the high-stake multi-cornered bypolls to the Jind assembly constituency in Haryana on Monday.
Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. In the first two hours, 15 percent voters had exercised their franchise and by 10:30 am, the poll percentage rose to nearly 25 percent.
Nearly 29 percent turnout was recorded in the first few hours of the ongoing polls to the Ramgarh Assembly constituency.
“Polling started at 8 am. VVPAT machines at five booths were replaced during a mock poll drill and three were replaced after polling began,” Returning Officer Pankaj Sharma said.
Digvijay Chautala, the Jananayak Janata Party (JJP) candidate, said, “We are confident. People will see a positive change in politics. Politics that will rise above religion, caste and creed”.

They, however, said the turnout is likely to increase as there were people in queues in several booths after 5 pm, the scheduled time for voting to end.
Final voting percentage will be released later, they said.

As per preliminary figures, poll percentage at 5 pm crossed 70 percent.
