The Election Commission announced on Thursday, 12 October, that the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections will be held on 9 November, and the results would be announced on 18 December.

The schedule for the Gujarat Assembly elections was not announced. However, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) said it would be held before 18 December, and indicated that there would be simultaneous counting in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.

Gujarat Assembly Elections Will be Held Before 18 Dec: EC

On Gujarat Assembly Elections, the Election Commission said the schedule for the polls would be announced soon, and that it would be held before 18 December.

This will enable simultaneous counting in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat... The poll schedule is planned as such that the Himachal result does not impact Gujarat elections.

Gujarat’s Exclusion From EC's Election Schedule Announcement Questioned

Several people took to social media to question the absence of the Gujarat assembly election schedule from the Election Commission presser on Thursday, 12 October.

Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh to be held on 9 November, and the results would be announced on 18 December, said Election Commission on Thursday, 12 October.

The poll process in Himachal Pradesh will start on 16 October with issue of notification. The last date for filing nominations is 23 October.

The model code of conduct has come into effect in Himachal Pradesh after the announcement of dates for Assembly elections, said Chief Election Comissioner AK Jyoti.

The Election Commission will be announcing the dates for only the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The dates for the Gujarat Assembly elections will be announced next week.

Speaking on the election process in Himachal, Chief Election Commissioner AK Jyoti said:

We will have VVPATs along with EVMs. Height of voting compartments will be increased to 30 inches.

EC to Announce Gujarat And Himachal Election Dates at 4 pm

The dates for the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh are likely to be announced on Thursday, 12 October.

The three-member Election Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner AK Jyoti, will address a press conference at 4 pm at the Nirvachan Sadan in Delhi when the full poll schedule for the two states is likely to be released.

Terms of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh Assembly End in Jan 2018

The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on 22 January 2018.

The BJP-ruled Gujarat has seen high-profile campaigning by both the BJP as well as the Congress. With an eye on elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a number of rallies and inaugurated projects in Gujarat a few days ago. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, too, recently concluded his second trip to the state as part of his proposed four-phase tour to cover all the regions.

On the other hand, the term of the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly ends on 7 January 2018. Himachal Pradesh is currently under Congress Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, the longest-serving CM of the state.
