Congress, in a list released on Friday, 29 March, named four new candidates for Bihar, seven for Odisha and one for Uttar Pradesh.

Among these names were former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar who will be contesting from Bihar’s Sasaram constituency and former ET Now journalist Supriya Shrinate, who has recently stepped down from her position as the executive director at ET Now Live news channel. Shrinate will be contesting from UP’s Maharajganj seat and will replace Tanushree Tripathi as the Congress candidate for the constituency.

Supriya, in a series of tweets, announced both the developments on her personal Twitter handle – of her joining Congress and getting the Maharajganj ticket, and of her stepping down as the executive editor for ET Now.

“I will be taking an active plunge in politics, am grateful to the Congress party, Mr Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia for trusting me with Maharajganj. It will be an honour to keep my late father’s legacy alive. I look forward to making a meaningful contribution.”

Shrinate, while announcing the nomination, said that she hopes to keep her father’s legacy alive. Her father, Mr Harshwardhan was an MP from the Maharajganj seat in 2009.

Shrinate further thanked Congress President Rahul Gandhi and UP general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia for trusting her with the important seat.

While announcing her stepping down from ET Now, she also thanked the Times Group.
