Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, on Friday, 30 August, said that he did not think MP Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia was “unhappy”.

Nath, who is also the present president of the Madhya Pradesh state Congress, made this statement while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Sonia Gandhi, in which he apprised her of the need to have a new state Congress chief.

The remark on Scindia comes amid rumours that he is in touch with the BJP and may be “looking for other options”, which was fuelled by his comments on the Kashmir issue, which was different from the party line.

Responding to threats by Scindia’s supporters that they might quit the Congress if he was not given the top job, Nath said:

“I don’t think it’s right and I don’t think he is angry with anyone.”

He also described his meeting with Sonia Gandhi as ‘fruitful’.

Kamal Nath was asked to become President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in April 2018. It was expected that he will give up the post afte he was appointed chief minister in December 2018, but decided to continue due to the Lok Sabha elections being around the corner.

There were reports of Jyotiraditya Scindia, a former MP from Guna, being angered at not being named deputy chief minister at the time. It was subsequently reported that he has delivered an ‘ultimatum’ to the party high command to grant him the top job, failing which he “will look for other options”.

On record, however, Scindia has said that there is “no question” of him quitting the party.
