The by elections in four Lok Sabha constituencies and 10 assembly seats that was held in Puducherry which is a Union Territory and the states of Assam, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh was a crucial election, as it was held right after the Centre’s decision to ban on old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in order to keep a check on blackmoney.

Tamil Nadu: AIADMK is leading in Thiruparankundram (bypoll) and Aravakurichi assembly seats.
BJP nominee and tribal leader Gyan Singh, who was leading by a margin of 60,000 votes in the Shahdol Lok Sabha seat, won the bypoll.
However, the BJP's victory margin in Shahdol has been substantially reduced from 2,41,301 in the 2014 general election to 60,383 this year.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had frequented Shahdol to ensure that BJP retains the seat as he did not want to give any chance to his rivals to attack him, given that his party had failed to retain the Ratlam-Jhabua Lok Sabha seat by-poll in November last year.
The Shahdol bypoll was necessitated due to the death of BJP MP Dalpat Singh Paraste. In 2014, BJP’s Paraste had won Shahdol from Congress’ Rajesh Nandini Singh by over 2.4 lakh votes.
BJP's Manju Dadu wons the Nepanagar assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh by 40,600 votes. Dadu is the daughter of late MLA Rajendra Shyamlal Dadu whose death in an accident necessitated the by-poll.
In Nepanagar, 71.25 percent polling was recorded on 19 November.
In Shahdol (reserved ST seat), Congress has fielded Himadri Singh, daughter of former Union Minister Dalbir Singh and ex-MP Rajesh Nandini Singh.
AIADMK won by 26,483 votes on Thanjavur assembly seat in Tamil Nadu. The ruling party is leading in the two other Assembly seats as well.
In Thanjavur, AIADMK candidate M Rengasamy won by a comfortable margin of over 25,000 votes against DMK candidate Anjugham Boopathy.
In Tamil Nadu, 81 contestants, including candidates from AIADMK, DMK, MDMK and BJP, will be fighting for three Assembly seats – Thanjavur, Aravakurichi and Tiruparakundram.
Dibyendu Adhikari of TMC wins Tamluk Lok Sabha seat by 4,97,528 votes. He was leading over his CPIM rival Mandira Panda by over 90,000 votes.
The Lok Sabha seat of Tamluk has been empty since its MP Suvendu Adhikari won the seat but was made a member of the state cabinet.
TMC candidate Saikat Panja won Monteswar Assembly bypoll defeating his nearest CPIM rival Md Osman Gani Sarkar by 1,27,127 votes.
Lok Sabha seat of Cooch Behar and Assembly seat of Monteswar were rendered vacant after their leaders and TMC members Renuka Sinha and Sajal Panja, respectively, died.
Parthapratim Roy of TMC leading in Cooch Behar over his BJP rival Hemchandra Burman by 30,000 votes.
The ruling CPI(M) in Tripura won the two Assembly seats, Barjala (SC) and Khowai, by defeating Congress and TMC candidates respectively.
CPI(M) candidate Jhumu Sarkar trounced his nearest BJP rival Shistamohan Das by a margin of 3,374 votes in Barjala (SC) constituency. CPI(M) secured 15,769 votes, while BJP garnered 12,395 votes.
By-poll in the constituency was necessitated due to the resignation of Congress MLA Jitendra Sarkar in last June.
Senior Congress leader and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy won the bypoll to the Nellithope Assembly constituency defeating AIADMK's Om Sakthi Segar, by a margin of 11,144 votes.
While Narayanasamy, whose victory was on expected lines, polled 18,709 votes out of the total 26,564 votes, Segar got 7,565 votes.
A John Kumar of the Congress had vacated the seat to enable Narayanasamy, who is not a member of the assembly, contest a by-election before 6 December deadline for getting elected to the House.
Lakhimpura seat has been vacant since its sitting MP Sarbananda Sonowal was elected Chief Minister of Assam in 2016.
Legislator from Baithalangso, Mansing Rongpi is one of the rebel Congress members who joined BJP. The seat was thus left vacant.
BJP is leading in both the seats.
