In March 2018, the by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur saw arch-rivals Mayawati and Akhilesh join forces to take on the PM Narendra Modi-led government. But this was just a glimpse of the mega coalition that is currently taking shape ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The recent events in the Karnataka elections, where opposition parties put up a united front and extended support to one another in order to fend off the BJP, is proof of growing opposition unity.
Who will lead this united front? Who will be face of this mega coalition? How will these parties distribute seats among themselves? What about those states where Congress is not up against BJP but powerful regional parties? These question still remain unanswered.
