West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, has been reappointed as the national general secretary of Trinamool Congress' (TMC's) new office bearers' committee, senior TMC leader Partha Chatterjee said on Friday, 18 February.
Party supremo Mamata Banerjee, on Friday, held a meeting of TMC's newly reconstituted National Working Committee – the top decision-making body of the ruling party.
The meeting was held at Banerjee's residence in Kolkata.
The TMC chief had formed a 20-member national committee amidst an apparent rift in the party. In true Mamata fashion, she had dissolved all the posts except hers in what many might call ‘tackling the problem head-on.’
The move was aimed at restoring unity within the party, which has been witnessing several bouts of infighting, especially between the old guard and the new guard, and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee stood right at the centre of it all.
The freshly formed committee held its first meeting on Friday, where Abhishek Banerjee was reinstated as the national general secretary of the party.
Sukhendu Sekhar Ray was selected as the Rajya Sabha spokesperson, Kakoli Ghosh Dostidar as the Lok Sabha spokesperson, and Aroop Biswas as the treasurer.
Meanwhile, Amit Mitra and Yashwant Sinha are part of the economic committee.
Firhad Hakim has been given a more important role in the party as he will be the bridge between the committee and Mamata.
Bidhan Upadhyay was appointed as the mayor of Asansol and Ram Chakraborty as mayor of Chanannagar; for Bidhannagar, Sabyasachi Dutta was appointed as the chairperson, Krishna Chakraborty as mayor, and Anita Mondal as deputy mayor.
