A Tale of Two Signatures: But Which One Is Mulayam’s?

The Samajwadi Party family feud, between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav, is growing uglier by the day

The latest in the ‘parivar’ is the curious case of two different signatures of party supremo Mulayam Singh on crucial orders he issued on 1 January.

The first order was to declare Akhilesh’s party convention as being unconstitutional while the second letter was sent to party vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda, sacking him from primary membership of the party for being present at Akhilesh’s meeting.

The letters were issued only a few hours apart, but the significant differences between Mulayam’s signatures have sparked speculation about the veracity of the documents.

Nanda responded to the controversy by saying the signature on his expulsion letter was not Netaji’s.

Akhilesh, who has been reinstated by his father after he was expelled for six years on Friday, alleged foul play. On Sunday, he said he suspected that “some people” had tricked his father into signing documents.

This is not the first time Akhilesh has accused an ‘outsider’ of the growing factions within the family and vis-a-vis the party. He accused Amar Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and close aide of Mulayam, of practically dictating the letter of his expulsion.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan said Netaji has not responded to the controversy yet, but asserted that one of the signatures was in short form and the other in full form.
