At least 11 people were found dead in Thal Khurd Village in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh on the night of 10 January. Of the 11, at least 9 are believed to be members of the same family. UP CM Yogi Adityanath announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased. Barabanki district official said the government believes the 11 died of the cold, but that investigation was ongoing and the bodies had been sent for postportem.
The 11 were allegedly found dead after eating dinner at a relative’s place in Thal Khurd. The victims were brought to the Trauma Centre in Lucknow for treatment after they complained of pain and discomfort.
Former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government in UP, claiming that the victims died from consuming illicit liquor.
The Additional District Magistrate for Barabanki, Anil Kumar Singh, said that one of the victims had died because of a heart attack, and the surviving members of the family had taken his body to perform the last rites, while causes for the death of the other 10 members are yet to be ascertained.
ADM Anil Kumar Singh added that the bodies of the other 10 were being closely examined, and have been sent for a postmortem. The ADM added that the details about the exact cause of death could only be stated accurately after the post-mortem report.
Yogi Adityanath has also directed a joint investigative team of the excise department and Home Ministry to proceed to Thal Khurd village in Barabanki to probe the deaths.
