The allleged rape of a minor girl in Odisha's Koraput district by four men has triggered tensions in the district.
The incident occurred on Tuesday near Kunduli when the minor, on her way to school, was allegedly waylaid by four men and dragged to a nearby field, where they took turns to rape her, the police said.
A senior police official said the girl had claimed in her statement that the four accused were wearing uniforms.
A case has been registered at the Pottangi police station under IPC sections 376(D) (gangrape), 377 (unnatural offences) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma said, adding that the police were looking at all angles.
The victim is currently undergoing treamtent in Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput.
According to The Hindu, an angry mob led by Congress MLA Krushna Chandra Sagaria staged a protest on the National Highway 26 connecting Koraput to Vishakhapatnam by burning tires, demanding the arrest of the 4 culprits.
The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) too asked the Koraput administration, inspector general of police and the ST and SC Development Department to inquire into the alleged gangrape case of a minor girl in the district and submit a report in seven days.
Earlier in the day, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had denounced the incident as 'inhuman', instructing the DGP to to arrest the accused and initiate stern action against them. he has also reportedly announced free medical treatment for the victim.
