On a day that witnessed two rail derailments – Ranchi Rajdhani Express and Shaktipunj Express – in a span of few hours, another similar mishap was averted between Farrukhabad and Fatehgarh in Uttar Pradesh, thanks to alert locals.

Minutes before the Delhi-Kanpur Kalindi Express was scheduled to pass through the area, the locals noticed a three-inch deep fracture on the tracks.

Flagging a red shirt to alert the driver, the locals managed to stop the train before it reached the damaged portion of the track, police officials said.

Railway officials, accompanied by local police, visited the spot near Bhopatpatti, and the train left for its destination after 30 minutes.

Fatehgarh Superintendent of Police Dayanand Mishra said the matter is being probed.

There has been a spate of train derailments in the past few months. In the two derailments on Thursday, no casualties were reported.
