During a panel discussion on nationalism at the Bangalore Literature Festival last week, Editorial Director of Swarajya Magazine, R Jagannathan, made a shocking misogynist comment.

While talking about the Supreme Court’s reversal of its 2016 judgement on compulsorily playing the National Anthem before movie screenings, Jagannathan said, “For an all male judiciary, they can't even blame the PMT (Pre-Menstrual Tension) or some such thing for their mood swings.”

Jagannathan's comment suggesting that women go through mood swings due to their menstrual cycle and comparing it with the Supreme Court's judgement on nationalism was deemed 'unnecessary and out of place' by some of the other panelists and led to an awkward discomfort on stage, followed with boos by the audience which made their displeasure clear.

Responding to the criticism, Jagannathan said that his intention was not meant to be “derogatory”.
