What’s November Got to Do With Facial Hair?

First, No Shave November and Movember are two separate movements. No Shave November is centred around forgetting the razor for the whole month (no razor, no waxing, on any part of the body) while Movember is focused specifically on the moustache (moustache + November = Movember). Movember rules discourage growing a beard simultaneously.

The two hair-raising camps are largely about awareness. They encourage people to cut down on their shaving time and instead, talk, learn and contribute towards men’s health issues like prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Give beards a chance. Let them grow through this month. A beard also acts a cushion, if somebody slaps you, so there’s an added advantage!

Movember began in 2003 and invites charities, under the Movember Foundation, to create awareness about prostate and testicular cancer. The organisation
has raised approximately $580 million to date and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries.

No Shave November is a web-based, non-profit organisation set up in 2009. It’s devoted to cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, in partnership with the American Cancer Society.

The growth of social media has amplified the two movements. Boys become men for the month of November and profile pictures across the social media universe take a hairy twist.

And like most social media promoted events, very few understand the significance or the original cause for the beard or moustache they might be flashing.

When else can you retain your laziness and still champion a social cause? This is it. Raise awareness and let it grow.
