In January 2018, a video of a man from Hyderabad attempting to take a selfie video in front of a speeding train began to make the rounds on social media. While the veracity of the video has not been ascertained yet, India tops the list of countries in terms of selfie-related deaths – with over 57 such deaths being reported since 2014 alone.

Two class ten students, Yash Kumar and Shubham Saini, lost their lives while taking selfies on a railway track in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar.

The young boys had gone with five others to take selfies with an approaching train in the background. However, the boys did not notice another train from the opposite direction and as a result both of them lost their lives.

According to data on deaths caused while taking selfies, 57 people have lost their lives since 2014.... all for a selfie. Russia and the United States have recorded the second and the third most number of selfie-related deaths.

The average age of Indian victims is 21 years, and 75 percent of them are male.

The madness clearly needs to end... but it doesn’t seem like we’re ready to accept that yet.
