Nirbhaya’s Parents Detained by Delhi Police at India Gate Protest

The youngest convict in the brutal gangrape and murder of the woman who came to be known as Nirbhaya in December 2012 has been released.

According to police sources, the juvenile convict is no longer under police protection. “We have left him with an NGO,” police sources said. Government sources said when asked two days back whether he would like to go home in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh or to an NGO, he opted for the latter, citing security concerns.

The man, who was a minor in 2012, was convicted and sentenced to three years in a correctional facility in 2013.

Fearing lynch mobs, the convict who is now 21, was shifted out of the Observation Home a few days ago.

Protests in New Delhi

Several people, led by the parents of Nirbhaya are meanwhile staging protests in the capital, near Jantar Mantar. Security being the prime priority, 70 police personnel were stationed to control the large throng of angry protesters.

Badri Singh Pandey, the victim’s father said:

We are helpless as far as the release is concerned. Our government, whether Centre or state, they only listen to you when you protest and get lathicharged, else they don’t care.

Other protesters along Jyoti Singh’s parents were detained by the Delhi police at Rajpath. They have been taken to the police station.
