The Uttar Pradesh government late on Friday, 18 October, denied media reports that claimed that it has banned the use of mobile phones in college premises across the state.

The Directorate of Higher Education, in a letter said that "no such directive has been given by the education board."

Earlier in the day, reports suggested that a circular by the government has banned students from using mobile phones un universities and colleges.

Students will no longer be allowed to take or use mobile phones inside universities and colleges, IANS reported.

The ban is also applicable to teachers across all universities and colleges in the state, it said.

‘Better Teaching Environment for Students’

The report also claimed that the Directorate of Higher Education issued the circular to ensure a 'better teaching environment for students across all colleges and universities in the state'.

It may be noted that Yogi Adityanath has already banned the use of mobile phones during his official meetings, including Cabinet meetings.

The decision was taken after some ministers and officers were found to be busy reading messages on WhatsApp during important meetings.
