Women Entrepreneurial Leadership on The Rise in India: Survey

With easier business environment & favourable policies women entrepreneurial leadership has increased, finds study.

An easier business environment with favourable policies has led to an increase in women entrepreneurial leadership in the country, according to a survey.

Women entrepreneurs account for almost one-fifth of all leadership profiles, who are mainly encouraged to this position favourable business atmosphere and the growing ease of doing business, according to LinkedIn data.

The survey is based on LinkedIn members data in India over the last eight years to understand what types of roles women were advancing.

In another survey, done by technology-solutions firm Suyati, it was found that top businesses run by women entrepreneurs in India included professional services, IT, apparel, food & beverages and manufacturing.

"Gender diversity has become a corporate-wide priority and companies are making progress, it's encouraging to see an uptick in women joining STEM-focused (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields and in observing an almost 30 percent rise in women leadership in India over the past 8 years," LinkedIn India HR Director Radha Shreeniwas said.

However, there is still work to be done not only in bringing more women into the workplace but also in mentoring and developing them to become future leaders, she added.

At a global level, a huge uptick was witnessed in women joining the STEM sector in the last four decades, the Linkedin study revealed.

Further, it found that women were infiltrating military, engineering and architecture roles, as well as the public safety and construction industries.

The top 10 roles globally, which saw an increase of women leadership include test-development engineers, automotive salespersons, mariners, technical sales professionals, physicists, military officers and surveyors, it said.
