Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped in Moving Car In Delhi, 2 Arrested

Two men allegedly trashed and raped a 19-year-old woman, who then left her outside a Metro station in New Delhi, on Saturday, 23 December. The police said that the two accused – a cab driver and his friend – were arrested the next day.

According to the police, the woman was found unconscious early Sunday morning. In her complaint, she said she had taken a cab from Shiv Chowk area in Gurugram late on Saturday night. Three persons were already in the cab then, the police said, Hindustan Times reported.

She left the mall around 10.30 pm and walked down to Shankar Chowk, where she took a cab contracted by a BPO to drop employees home.

Private cab drivers often pick passengers for a nominal fare when they are not on duty. “The driver told the woman that he would drop her to Uttam Nagar Metro station for Rs 30. From there, she could take the Metro to east Delhi," the officer told HT.

The woman became wary when the driver took an unfamiliar route. However, upon questioning the driver about the route, the two men allegedly told her to shut up and threatened to kill her if she did not.

According to Hindustan Times, the driver stopped the car at an isolated stretch along the Delhi-Haryana border and the two men allegedly took turns to rape her.

Perpetrators Arrested

The woman informed the police that she was too terrified to protest or shout for help. After they had committed the crime, she requested them to drop her at a Metro station.

Based on her statement, a case of gangrape and abduction was registered at Dwarka Sector 23 police station.

The woman had noted down a couple of digits of the car’s registration number, and the police used CCTV footage to track down the driver.

The driver later told the police about his friend, who works for a travel company. He was subsequently arrested, as well.

The driver and his friend told us that they had gone to pick BPO employees for their office shift, but the staff didn’t turn up. So, they decided to pick people waiting for transport to Delhi and earn some extra money.
