A week on from the Ranaghat gangrape of a 71 year old Catholic nun, a similar incident has been reported in Bengal’s Malda district.

A 38 year old sadhvi from the Ramakrishna Mission was allegedly raped by four men on 13th March. The accused have been named as Bharat Halder, Pranay Halder, Sanjivan Vishwas and Aseem Pahaadi.

Acording to a report in Patrika, the victim is a resident of the Mihir Das colony in English Bazaar district in West Bengal. The Mission has demanded strict action against the accused.

According to RK Mission sources, when the survivor was returning from a nearby market in the evening, the four alleged accused grabbed her, took her to a mango grove and allegedly raped her.

Reports say that the sadhvi went to the police station several times to register a complaint, but the police allegedly conspired with the accused and asked her to ‘settle’ the matter.

On Thursday, after pressure by the members of Ramakrishna Mission, the police finally registered a complaint. Prasoon Banerji, District Superintendent of Police said,

Four accused have been arrested, based on the sadhvi’s complaint. Search for the remaining two accomplices is still on. Why didn’t the police register a complaint immediately? A report will be demanded and action would be taken against police officers found guilty.
