The administrator of a WhatsApp group was arrested by the police in Matunga, Mumbai, after the he ‘accidentally’ added a woman to the group that shared pornographic material, The Times of India reported on Tuesday, 27 November.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the complainant’s number was added to the WhatsApp group, Triple XXX in September, which she initially thought was a prank by her friends.
However, after discovering that the group shared pornographic material, the complainant, who’s a housewife, lodged a complaint at the Matunga police station.
Accused, Mustaq Ali Shaikh (24), who is a carpenter from West Bengal, was arrested by the police on 22 November under various sections of IPC for outraging the modesty of a woman and 67 & 67-A of the IT Act.
According to The Times of India , the complaint lodged by the woman stated that the group comprised of 12 members. Speaking to the national daily, investigating officer, Maruti Shelke said that Shaikh was arrested from Sion-Dharavi area in Mumbai after tracing his mobile number.
The officer further revealed that the accused had confirmed that the woman was ‘accidentally’ added to the group. However, Shaikh, in his defence said that the group was only created for ‘personal use.’
Meanwhile, the police have confiscated Shaikh’s phone and have sent it to the Forensic Science Laboratory to retrieve its data. They are also awaiting a detailed report on other members of the the WhatsApp group.
