A 45-year-old Bengal labourer has been arrested for the alleged murder and rape of a 13-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Haldia township. The girl, who was the daughter of the man’s neighbours, used to visit his home from time to time to watch television.

The man has been identified as Sujan Patra.

According to The Hindustan Times, the girl went missing from Patra’s home on Friday evening. Locals later found her body in a sack inside his home.

The report further states that the police found evident signs of sexual assault on the girl’s body.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the allegation of rape. Patra has been booked for murder. The charge of rape will be added once we get the report”, Kudrate Khoda, inspector-in-charge of Haldia police station, told HT.

Patra was alone at home on Friday when the girl visited their home as his wife was visiting their daughter who got married a month ago. Locals as well as the girl’s mother claim that they heard her crying but when they went to Patra’s house to inquire, he said he was alone.

Police say that Patra raped the girl in the evening and returned later in the night to kill her. He then put her body in a sack which he was supposed to dump but did not get the opportunity to do so. The neighbours found the sack when they forcibly entered his house.
