The issue of gagging freedom of speech has now been the highlight of recent protests at Delhi University, especially after 20-year-old student Gurmehar Kaur was under fire for speaking against violence in the campus.
Now, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi has claimed that she was barred from speaking on triple talaq at a seminar organised at Jamia Millia Islamia University on 16 February as she is a member of the saffron party.
While speaking with ANI, Ilmi said: I was invited to speak and was one of the participants in a panel discussion, and it was supposed to be on triple talaq. It is a very important issue on which we had to debate, but there was a lot of pressure on the organisers. They felt if I were to speak on it then it would lead to some kind of disturbance in the campus.
She also said that "since we called the bluff of Communist and called Congress corrupt, we faced this harassment".
Reports said that protests erupted after the event at Jamia was rescheduled and the list of speakers was changed.
