A shocking video showing two women with babies in their arms being beaten up by a cop inside a police station has emerged on social media.

The video has gone viral with the claim that the incident occurred at the GRP police station in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior.

The video has been shared extensively on Facebook as well.

The video shows a constable hitting a woman with his lathi and threatening her, even as she clutches the child in her arms. He is then seen dragging her on the floor of the room by her hair, all the time with the child in her arms.

The incident has also been reported on by local news channel IBC 24.

Speaking to The Quint, the channel's Gwalior correspondent Mahendra Singh said that the women in the video were identified by the police as beggars who frequent the city railway station. The reason behind their detention is yet to be ascertained.

Quoting the station's sub-inspector Ajit Chauhan, Singh said that the video was presumed to be at least two years old. "The SI is currently investigating the matter. The constable in the video has been identified as one Subhash, who continues to serve in the station and is currently out on election duty. Once he returns, he will be questioned on the matter," Singh said.

The Quint also got in touch with Gwalior City Superintendent of police (CSP) DBS Bhadoria, who also confirmed that the incident is from two years ago.

Then why the delay in taking action against the constable?

“The video was brought to our notice only yesterday after it was shared by a journalist. Preliminary investigation by SI Chauhan has shown that it is from around two years ago. We do not deny the fact that the constable’s actions were wrong and uncalled for. Appropriate action will be taken against him.”
