Elphinstone Stampede: Varun Grover Expresses Outrage Over Tragedy

Twenty-two people were reportedly killed in a stampede at Mumbai's Elphinstone Railway Station that broke out at around 10.46 am on 29 September.

Comedian and lyricist Varun Grover took to Twitter to express his outrage over the incident. He said every train station in Mumbai is a death trap, with tragedy waiting to happen.

In a series of tweets, Grover pointed out how apathetic the administration is, and how, by using phrases such as ‘spirit of Mumbai’, the public is fooled into ignoring facts.

Calling it ‘murder by systemic failure’, Grover said Mumbaikars were just lucky this sort of incident did not happen every day. He did, however, quoted an oft-repeated stat: Nine people die in mishaps involving Mumbai trains every day.

Grover’s indignation was echoed by several Twitter users, with many of them blaming the apathy of the government.
