Two UP policemen were booked for attempt to murder after they were caught on camera thrashing, dragging and then slapping a man in public.

The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharth Nagar district on Tuesday,10 September.

WHAT WE CAN SEE IN THE VIDEO

The video of the incident, which took place under the Khesraha police station, shows a little terrified boy watching his uncle, Rinku Pandey, get beaten up by the two cops.

In the video, sub-Inspector Virendra Mishra and head constable Mahendra Prasad can be seen beating up the man, dragging him by his hair and verbally abusing him. One of the cops is also seen sitting on the man in an attempt to torture him.

Towards the end of the video, the police can be seen threatening to keep him till he surrenders his bike keys. The man refused to give the keys and asks, “What is my fault?”.

WHAT ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN?

Both the police officers have been suspended and a departmental probe has been ordered into the incident. The duo have also been booked for attempt to murder.

Siddharth Nagar SP told The Indian Express that on Tuesday, on the occasion of Muharram, the police had received information that Pandey was abusing a Muslim youth in an inebriated state which is when the two policemen had reached the spot.

“The policemen dealt with the situation in an unacceptable manner. It was a disgusting and condemnable act of indiscipline. Following an inquiry by our SP Sadar, we suspended the policemen.”

The man's family, however, stated that the beating started over an argument on traffic violation, reported NDTV.
