Soon after The Times of India said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) corroborated the Unnao rape survivor’s charges against accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar on Friday, 11 May, the CBI issued a statement denying the info.

In a press release, CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said, “In response to media queries related to a news item published today in a national daily, it is stated that investigation in Unnao case is still continuing. CBI has not given any update/conclusion/views with respect to the case to any mediaperson.”

All such stories related to Unnao case published/broadcast in the media recently are purely speculative.

What The Times of India Report Said

TOI, in its report dated 11 May, said that the CBI has corroborated the charges of rape against Sengar in the Unnao rape case. The report goes on to quote an unnamed CBI source who speaks of inconsistencies in the police investigation, and claims the investigation was “ in connivance with the accused persons.”

According to the CBI officer, the girl’s medical examination was delayed and her vaginal swab or her clothes were not sent to the forensic lab.

The Uttar Pradesh government had handed over the probe to the central investigating agency following an uproar over the local police’s alleged efforts to save the accused MLA.

Sengar and the other accused were arrested by the CBI on 13-14 April and were questioned at length.

Survivor Demands Death Penalty for Accused MLA

Following The Times of India report, the rape survivor reiterated her demand for a death penalty for the accused, ANI reported.

The girl’s uncle had also demanded protection for their family. “We demand protection for our family so that we can give our statement before the court fearlessly. We demand death penalty for Kuldeep Sengar,” ANI quoted him as saying.
