A 75-year-old Dalit man who was surviving on begging allegedly committed suicide after not being able to get food in Darguwa village in Bundelkhand in MP.

Inspector C L Parihar of Baldeogarh police station said the deceased, Sukhya Vanskar, survived on begging in the village after his son left him some 20 years ago. Kharagpur MLA and Congress leader Chanda Singh Gaur alleged that Sukhya hanged himself in his hut as he could not get food even after begging.

Inspector said the police were investigating the reason for suicide.

Gaur said the deceased did not get any benefit of the government schemes, and the Centre as well as the BJP Government in the state had turned a blind eye to the Bundelkhand region (which includes Tikamgarh, Sagar and Damoh districts of MP) which is reeling under a severe drought and heading for a famine.

Several farmers in Bundelkhand had committed suicide due to debts and agrarian distress recently, Gaur said. Instead of forming ‘Happiness Ministry’, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should do some real work for people’s well-being, she said.
