Several legislators and public representatives in Hyderabad were in for a surprise on Monday, when they received a wedding invitation.
The invitation from Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) MLC Sabavat Ramulu Naik did not come alone. It came packed together with a thick silver bangle and a 'sherwani'. The invitation was for the wedding of Naik’s younger son.
The TRS MLC, who belongs to the Banjara community, and his aides defended the move, stating that they were only following the custom of the community.
Women from the Banjara tribal community wear silver bangles and ornaments, and it is part of their customs to gift silver. Naik’s son Narender Sabavat told The Times of India:
The TOI report also adds that the TRS MLC is reportedly planning a grand wedding for his younger son on 16 April at Nizam College grounds in Hyderabad.
The MLC met with Telangana Chief Minister and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, and handed him the first invitation for the wedding.
In 2014, Naik was nominated as an MLC in the Governor's quota.
He has been known for actively working for getting a Banjara Bhavan sanctioned for the community in Banjara Hills.
