Triple Talaq Prevents Murder: Muslim Board’s Views Anger Twitter

AIMPLB hailed triple talaq as crucial and said the SC had no business interfering with religious laws.

There’s no dearth of misogynistic statements made by some people in positions of authority from time to time. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) exemplified this perfectly while trying to justify the practice of triple talaq.

Proclamations made by the Board, including ones saying women are weaker and men make better decisions, clearly didn’t go down well with people. Women as well as men took to Twitter to express their shock on these thoughtless remarks.

A member of the All India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board, Shaista Amber also rejected the Muslim Personal Law Board’s views and said that even though they’re right in certain aspects, they haven’t considered the problems faced by Muslim women.

AIMPLB hailed triple talaq as a much-needed practice and said that the Supreme Court had no business interfering with religious laws.

If the Personal Law Board would handle women’s welfare successfully, a separate Women’s Personal Law Board wouldn’t have been formed and Muslim women wouldn’t have to go to civil courts to resolve their matters.

She also said that the Supreme Court should take a look into the matter and all the parties including the Board should have a say in the discussion.

“Triple talaq can’t be used as a weapon. Quran specifies that it has to be done with harmony and consent of the wife and with witnesses. We wouldn’t accept it as an act of anger or hatred where it’s said thrice in one breath or through SMS or WhatsApp,” Amber added.

The Board made bizarre statements such as “when a marriage is not working out, taking case to courts is a long process and it may lead to the husband murdering the wife, in such cases triple talaq is a better recourse.”

People on Twitter called out the remarks made by the Board as sexist and regressive.

The Board also said that “polygamy prevents men from having illicit sex.”
