Ranjan Roy, chief of the Times News Network (TNN) and a member of The Times of India’s national editorial board passed away on Saturday in his Gurgaon home after a prolonged battle against cancer, at the age of 58.

Roy was an alumnus of St Stephen’s and Princeton University, and holds a postgraduate degree in Public Affairs. As a journalist, he did exceedingly well for himself at the Press Trust of India in New Delhi and the Associated Press in Kuala Lumpur and New York. He has covered politics and war in South and Southeast Asia and Afghanistan, and whilst in New York, he reported exhaustively on the United Nations’ proceedings.

In 2004, he returned to India to head TNN and continued to do so until his death yesterday – for over 14 years. In this period, TOI has expanded to 60 editions, with a vast network of correspondents across the country.

Journalists Remember Roy

Following his demise, several prominent and seasoned journalists took to social media to express their grief over the news and share their memories of him, Roy having mentored most of them in the early years of their career.
