A 25-year-old software engineer from Andhra Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of a hotel in Viman Nagar in Pune, over the lack of "job security" in the Information Technology sector, the police said.
Gopikrishna Durgaprasad, who had worked in Delhi and Hyderabad earlier, joined an IT firm in Pune recently and had only been in the city for three days. His employer had put him up in the hotel, according to police.
Police found the suicide note, purportedly written by the techie, in his room.
Durgaprasad was spotted lying in a pool of blood at around 4 am by the staff of the hotel, who in turn alerted the police. The body was handed over to his relatives after postmortem.
"We have registered a case and our investigation is underway," he said.
Durgaprasad’s death comes amid increasing panic in the IT sector over layoffs.
Several IT majors, including Wipro and Infosys, are reportedly gearing up for large-scale layoffs.
This is being attributed to at least two major factors – slump in the growth of the IT sector and its focus on automation that is linked to a need for a smaller workforce.
