A 17-year-old girl, who was found dead at her home in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai on Monday, 4 June, is suspected to have killed herself by consuming poison after she failed in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
The Dalit girl took this major step after she scored 39 marks out of 720 in the nationwide examination, which selects students for undergraduate medical and dental courses.
Her body is presently kept at Villupuram Government hospital to conduct an autopsy, reported ANI.
In a similar incident, a 19-year-old medical aspirant, on Monday, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 8th floor of a building in Dwarka Sector 12, hours after the NEET results were announced.
"Further enquiry revealed that the deceased was appearing in the NEET exam for the last two years after passing class 12 in year 2016. Today, the result of NEET was declared in noon and he had failed to qualify the exam," the official said.
A suicide note was found in his room which mentioned he had lied about NEET result to his parents, he said.
Over 13 lakh candidates had appeared for the NEET exam at 2,225 centres across the country on 7 May, results of which were declared on Monday.
