Sushma Swaraj has “buckled and prostrated herself in front of Chinese power”, said Congress President Rahul Gandhi, criticising the BJP’s handling of the Doklam issue, on Thursday, 2 August.

Gandhi’s jibe against the external affairs minister came a day after she had stated in the Lok Sabha that the Doklam standoff had been "resolved with diplomatic maturity without losing any ground".

Swaraj had further added: “There is no change in the status quo (on the ground). There is not an iota of change. The face-off at sight has been resolved on 28 August, 2017,” NDTV reports.

Swaraj was attempting to counter the many recent reports that suggested, quoting US sources, that the Chinese army has secretly resumed activities in the Doklam region.

What Was the Doklam Standoff?

The Doklam standoff refers to a 73-day standoff that took place between the Indian and the Chinese armies, after the former stopped the latter from building a new road in the disputed tri-junction of Bhutan, China and India.

Back then as well, Gandhi had called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “hopping on a swing with the Chinese President on the banks of the Godavari, even as the latter sends Chinese soldiers into Indian territory,” The Times of India reports.

The issue had been “resolved” on 28 August, 2017, when both India and China had announced that they had withdrawn all their troops from the disputed Doklam region.
