Several political leaders on Wednesday, 19 August, hailed the Supreme Court verdict that ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said that the SC verdict will ensure justice to Sushant Singh Rajput and his family.
“Supreme Court verdict makes it clear that probe by Bihar Police and FIR registered here were correct. Not just Sushant Singh Rajput's family or people of Bihar, entire country is concerned over the matter. With CBI probe, people can trust there'll be justice,” he said, reported ANI.
Bihar Deputy CM and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Kumar Modi took to Twitter to say that the Bihar government stands vindicated.
“We welcome the decision of Supreme Court to allow CBI to continue with its probe of Sushant death case on the basis of FIR filed in Bihar. Our stand vindicated (sic),” he tweeted.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that CBI taking over the investigation for a fair probe will ensure Rajput’s soul will rest in peace.
“Its a matter of great moment that SC has transferred the investigation to CBI. I would expect that CBI will now undertake a professional character and conduct a time-bound investigation,” he said.
“I'm sure his (Sushant's) soul will now rest in peace that a fair investigation will happen. I also wish to appreciate the courage and perseverance shown by his father and family members that justice is done,” he said.
Member of Parliament and ally of the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Chirag Paswan took to Twitter thanking the Supreme Court and said that the order had fulfilled the wishes of scores of Rajput’s fans across India.
“Not only the truth will surface now but those name will also come out who were behind disrupting the investigation in the case. I hope the Court's order has brought relief to Sushant Singh Rajput's family,” he said.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that his party was the first to demand a CBI probe but the Bihar government delayed the matter.
“I welcome the Supreme Court verdict recommending CBI probe in the case. This is victory for justice. On 30 June, we had demanded a CBI probe. But, the Bihar Government took 42 days to wake up,” he told ANI.
Several leaders trained guns at the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai police over the probe.
“It's a matter of satisfaction for people of Bihar who want fair investigation in the case. It was unfortunate that Mumbai police was not carrying out proper investigation in case,” Union minister and Arrah MP RK Singh said, as quoted by ANI.
Former Maharashtra CM and Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis also attacked the Uddhav Thackeray-led government in the state.
“Maharashtra government should introspect on the way the case was handled in the state,” he said.
Leaders from the Maharashtra government initially refused to comment on the case as the judgment was not yet out. After studying the verdict, however, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said they welcomed the apex court’s decision, given its statements about the investigation by the police.
“We welcome judgment of Supreme Court and we will provide whatever cooperation is needed by the CBI. It is a matter of pride for Mumbai Police that Supreme Court observed there is no fault found in their investigation,” Deshmukh told ANI.
When asked if the Mumbai Police would conduct its own parallel investigation, Deshmukh said the state government would consider whether this was possible in light of the judgment. The court noted that the possibility of this could only arise if a new FIR was registered in Mumbai, as the Mumbai Police had not registered any FIR thus far. In such an event, the court has said in para 41 that if such a new FIR were registered, the CBI would investigate that as well.
In a press briefing by the Congress party, spokesperson Shaktisinh Gokil said that they demand that the CBI fulfill its duty and complete its investigation at the earliest. He also fired a warning shot over alleged politicking in the case by the Bihar government, saying, "Justice will not be delivered by the statements being made by BJP- JDU for political gains in view of the Assembly polls. There should be a proper investigation in the case.”
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, who has found himself in the middle of a controversy several times over making statements during the probe, refused to make a ‘political comment’ on the verdict.
“Supreme Court has given its verdict, it is not right to make political comments. Our state's justice system has always been one of the best in the country, no one is above law here and to provide justice to all has been the norm,” he added.
The apex court on Wednesday rejected actor Rhea Chakraborty's petition, that sought transferring the investigation from Patna to Mumbai, and handed over the probe to the CBI.
The court upheld the validity of the case file in Patna amid ongoing investigation in Mumbai, but said that the Mumbai Police also has jurisdiction in the case.
Rajput’s family and their lawyer hailed the verdict and said that justice will be delivered by CBI in the matter.
