Six policemen were suspended on Sunday, 5 November, in connection with a stampede in Bihar's Begusarai district the previous day, which killed three elderly women. Begusarai Superintendent of Police Aditya Kumar said in a statement, that Sub-Inspectors Ruby Kant Kachchap and Dheerendra Kumar Pathak, and Additional Sub-Inspector Ganesh Kumar Singh have been suspended after they were found, prima facie, guilty of dereliction of duty.
The six were found guilty of "extreme laxity in carrying out their duties" which involved steps to prevent such incidents.
At least 10 others were also injured in Saturday’s stampede. The stampede broke out when people had gathered at Begusarai’s Simaria Ghat, to take a holy dip on the occasion of Kartik Purnima celebrations, reported PTI.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in the stampede.
