Disallowing people from benefitting from the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exam scam, the Supreme Court stayed the declaration of results for the year 2017 on Friday, 31 August.
The court ordered a stay on declaration of results and said, "it cannot permit people benefitting from SSC examination scam to get into service," reported Hindustan Times.
The court also said prima facie the entire SSC recruitment system and examination are tainted, The Economic Times reported.
Pulling up Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for CBI, for taking a stand to defend the officials of SSC, the bench expressed surprise at not demanding cancellation of exams, reported Hindustan Times.
“Mr Solicitor, it is surprising that you are taking this stand. You are appearing for CBI and you should have said that the examination must be cancelled. Your status report implicates several people and you are taking a different stand,” Hindustan Times reported, quoting the Bench.
The SSC conducts examinations to recruit non-gazetted staff for central ministries and other institutions.
Massive protests were staged earlier this year in February when several candidates had alleged that the question paper for Combined Graduate-Level (Tier-II) exam held from February 17 to 22 for the year 2017 was leaked on social media.
The SSC, which conducts examination for subordinate services, had recommended a CBI inquiry. The alleged paper leak had triggered widespread protests, following which a CBI probe was ordered. The SSC decided not to declare the results till the agency completed its probe.
