At a time when the ruling government and its ministers are claiming to be the ‘chowkidars’ of the nation, a Muslim family was brutally thrashed by a mob of Hindu fanatics on the day of Holi in Haryana’s Gurugram.
As the video of the attack went viral, Congress President Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter on Saturday, 23 March, and hit out at the RSS and the BJP.
Gandhi said, “The RSS/BJP channelises bigotry & hatred for political power. This incident serves as a warning of the dangerous consequences & the dark side of that strategy.”
In the video that has gone viral, the family of Mohammad Sajid can be seen screaming for help.
Several people also took to Twitter to question Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking what action will the ‘chowkidar’ take against the perpetrators.
Sajid’s nephew and other members of the family were reportedly playing cricket at a vacant plot close to the house when they were accosted by two men on a bike. The men allegedly questioned them about what they were doing there and then said, “Go to Pakistan and play.”
After Sajid intervened, one of the men slapped him and later returned with a mob to vandalise Sajid’s house and thrashed his family. They broke windows, damaged cars and allegedly took away valuables, including a pair of gold earrings, a gold chain and Rs 25,000 from the house.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, too, criticised the mob, saying it wasn’t that of Hindus, but goondas.
Even Randeep Surjewala slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
