Slaughterhouse Ban May Cause Hike In Aligarh Uni Hostel Mess Fee

The meat shortage has forced the authorities to look for alternative meal options.

The impact of the crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh has now reached Aligarh Muslim University.

The hostel mess serves meat for at least one meal everyday and the authorities have been forced to switch to alternatives like chicken and fish, the prices of which have gone up in the wake of the meat ban, The Indian Express reported.

The move may result in a hike in the mess fees for the students.

Faizul Hasan, president of AMU Students' Union told The Indian Express:

There haven’t been any meat dishes for the past 6-7 days. The biggest problem in this is that it may lead to an increase in dining charges. Chicken prices have gone up from Rs 120 to 220 per kilogram, vegetable prices have also increased. Students from middle and lower-middle classes may suffer due to this.

AMU's Public Relations Officer, Omar Peerzada said alternatives are being looked at without compromising the quality of food.

Abdul Qadir, a PhD student, told The Indian Express:

If a certain amount of time was allotted during demonetisation move, why so much haste in shutting down illegal abattoirs? Why couldn’t the government give some time to get the licenses issued or renewed?
