SC Directs Google, Yahoo to Enforce Ban on Sex-Determination Ads

The Supreme Court on Thursday heard a PIL seeking a ban on foreign websites which solicit couples to undergo pre-natal sex determination tests.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been directed by the Apex Court to set up a “nodal agency” for enforcing a ban on commercial advertisements and any information on the internet with the intent of urging couples to take sex-determination tests for the foetus.
The bench refused to accept arguments by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft that doing so was a violation of right to information of people and said a nodal agency is to be alerted when people solicit such information.
