SC Issues Notice to Maharashtra Govt on Complete Beef Ban

On Friday, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Maharashtra Government on its complete ban on beef in the state.
The Bombay High Court had upheld the Maharashtra government’s decision to ban the slaughter of cows and bullocks in the state in May this year.
However, the court struck down the section in the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act that criminalises possession of beef brought from outside the state.
Based on a petition the Supreme Court issued a notice to the BJP-led state government challenging the Bombay HC order, permitting the consumption of beef brought from other states where slaughtering of cows is not illegal.
The court will next hear the matter after six weeks.
