A teacher from Ryan International School in Bannerghtta, Bengaluru, was terminated from service for assaulting a class 9 student on 20 September.

As the student, Sarfaraz K, had to be hospitalised following the assault, and the incident took place in wake of the recent murder of a 7-year-old in Gurugram’s Ryan International School, a police case has been registered by the parents as well.

According to the police, the student was pulled up by the teacher, Ashok, for talking in the class and he was caned in front of other students. He was allegedly hit on his back and abdomen area several times by Ashok.

“Upon enquiring about the incident with our child, I cam to understand there our child and friends were being mischievous in the class. Then the teacher, Ashok, lost his temper and started hitting him brutally. In the name punishment, he can’t brutally beat my child. I learnt from other parents that this is not the first time Ashok lost his temper and beat students,” Sarfaraz’s father, Khayum Pasha, wrote in his letter to the school.

The student was admitted in a nursing home and subsequently moved to a private hospital, where doctors found fluid concentration where he was assaulted. Doctors have advised 10 days of bed rest for the student. “He is unable to walk at the moment and he is in pain. We are taking him to doctors for further tests and treatment,” Pasha told The Quint.

Upon learning about the incident, the school management terminated the teacher the same day.

As the child had to be hospitalised and was traumatised by the experience, the family lodged a police complaint the next day. Although the police tried to brush aside the matter claiming it was ‘common’, they agreed to lodge an FIR after family insisted on it.

Naryana, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru Rural, said that cases will be booked under the POCSO Act and the IPC. No arrest has been made in the case so far.

“The case is of a teacher caning a student due to which he had to be hospitalised. We have asked our officers to register the cases and begin a probe,” he said.
