In Bihar, Shocking 83% of Candidates Fail Teacher Eligibility Test

The abysmal performance of the candidates is being seen as a cause Bihar’s class 10 and 12 students’ poor showing.

The Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) results were announced on Thursday and in Bihar, and an appalling 83 percent of the candidates failed the examination, as India Today reported.

The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) declared results, showing that only 17 percent of the candidates managed to pass.

The exam was held in June, across 348 centres, as was declared by BSEB chief Anand Kishore.

Kishore stated that to qualify for teaching classes 1 to 5, a total of 43,000 teachers appeared for the exam but only 7,038 passed, and for class 6 to 8, a total of 1,68,700 candidates appeared but only 30,113 passed.

Cut offs were 60 percent for general category, 55 percent for backward category candidates and 50 percent for SC-ST candidates.

While disturbing, the failure wasn’t shocking as in this year’s class 10 and class 12 examinations, where 49 percent and 64 percent of students failed the examination.

The students’ poor performance is also being attributed to poor standard of teachers because of which Nitish Kumar announced a compulsory retirement of non-performing teachers at the age of 50.
