At a farmhouse in Delhi, a 42-year-old architect was seriously injured from gun firing on New Year’s Eve – leading to her death.

Raju Singh, a Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) member from Bihar, who was intoxicated at the time, had fired the shots. Singh has since then been arrested and sent to police custody.

BJP’s Horse Who Lost to RJD

Singh, according to The Indian Express, is an influential real-estate businessman hailing from Sahebganj, Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

He was formerly an MLA from the Janata Dal (United), but he formally joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP in 2015 and is currently a member of the party. Singh has five cases registered against him in Bihar, including two under the Arms Act, an attempt to murder, and a case of criminal intimidation, according to The Wire.

Forty-eight-year-old Singh had contested the Assembly polls in 2015 in Bihar on a BJP ticket. He lost to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)’s MLA by 10,660 votes.

His wife is a former Member of Legislative Council from Bihar.

What Happened on the Night of 31 December?

Singh and his brother had invited around 60 people to a party at the farmhouse on the night of 31 December. According to the police officials, the brothers had made elaborate arrangements – and the party was being held on the lawns.

“Prima facie it appears that Raju whipped out his pistol around midnight and started firing in the air to celebrate. He fired two-three shots. The victim was on the dance floor with her friends, and appears to have been hit by a stray bullet,” an investigating officer told The Indian Express.

The former two-time MLA, Singh, went “absconding” along with his driver soon after the woman was shot by him.

Special CP Law and Order has confirmed that BJP member Singh shot a 42 year-old woman during New Year celebrations on the night of 31 December.

A case under Section 307, 201, 34 of Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered against Singh and others.
